Hi Leaders - check out this short 1.5 minute intro video.

Eliminate Stress?    No Way!!

I know this may sound strange, but you don’t want to eliminate stress from your life! Rather, you want to think about stress in a specific way - that it actually is necessary to reach peak performance.

Imagine stress as an ocean wave.

You can surf the wave and harness the energy to increase your confidence and have more personal power.

Harness Stress

OR you can have the wave crash over you and turn your world upside down and doing it, probably, in a very painful way.

Stress Overwhelm

I found that I didn’t like the person I became when overwhelmed by stressed. If I allow it, stress will control my character, my personality, my self. The greater the stress, the more control I lose over my actions and thoughts. I become a person I wouldn’t want to be friends with. A person I don’t want to be. I found that stress controlled my character. That my character was powerless in the face of certain stress.

And that was something I couldn’t abide. That was a weakness I couldn’t tolerate. Because the life I envisioned had stress involved. Heavily involved especially as I am a leader. And leadership and stress are related. Stress is often is the other side of the leadership coin. When you pursue leadership, it means you live with stress.

But, and this is a VERY BIG BUT, some stress is good, as the following graph shows:

Yerkes-Dodson Stress Chart

The way you think about stress is extremely important. If you only see stress as negative and harmful, it will be mostly negative and harmful for you. However, if you look at the graph and see how necessary stress is for us to attain the best from our bodies and minds, then stress, up to a certain point, helps us be better, to do things we couldn’t do without the stress to energize and excite us.

Ready for a little bit of self-evaluation?

Create a list of stressors that are good for you, so you can maximize your performance.

Example: When you feel your heart start to beat faster and your breath become shallower, you are feeling stress. Instead of letting this stressed feeling make you feel small, incapable, ill-prepared, etc, tell yourself:

“This is my body/brain telling me to get ready, to become bigger,
to harness my resources for the task at hand.”

Then instead of allowing this stress to control you, control it instead. Do this by starting to breath deeply and focus on taking big, deeper breaths. Your body/brain will start to feel bigger, more capable, ready to tackle what challenge lies in front of you.

But when you don’t control your thinking at the beginning of stress, you feel smaller, shrunken, tight and ultimately scared. Just by thinking of stress as a means of making yourself more powerful, faster, smarter, bigger, stronger, it becomes true.

Try this yourself: the next time you find yourself stressed or getting stressed, think about how you think about stress. Start to introduce the concept that what is happening to you at that moment...

>>>  the sweating

>>>  the nervy energy

>>>  the shorter breaths

>>>  the extremely loud inner voice

>>>  the overwhelming negative thoughts

>>>  the blood pounding strangely in your head

… is meant to help you. That feeling those feelings, thinking those thoughts, experiencing those sensations, are the human part of you responding to stress. That as long as you rise up with this response you stand a chance of riding it to peak performance at this moment in your life. A chance to use stress for your benefit. A chance to escape the dictatorship of stress. A chance to be a bigger, better version of yourself in a time of stress.

Stress CAN be helpful!

Change the way you THINK to change the way you act.

Change the way you ACT to change the way you think.

Change comes from either or both directions; so if you can’t change the way you think or act in specific areas (e.g. health, finances, personality, relationships…), if they are broken or busted, then these are the places you really need to pay attention. That is your brain, your body and your life saying that you need to learn something that you haven't learned yet.

The way you think about stress determines its impact.

So pay attention to how you are thinking as you get stressed.

It can fill you with POWER or it can sap all your energy/fill you with fear… your choice!

What causes YOUR daily Stress?

For most Leaders, one of the constant challenges is standing in front of others delivering content.

sales meetings

pitches

countless meetings with various divisions and teams

endless streams of presentations

But rarely are leaders given resources to handle the specific stresses created by leading these presentations, pitches, meetings etc. Also, everyone wants to be engaged these days! But how do you do that effectively and powerfully when you already have so much stress layered on you as a leader… and this only adds more?

That’s where “Poo on your Shoe” comes in.
But first, let's look at a typical Leader situation.

Claire is a VP of Human Resources. Every week stress drains her when she is challenged with these tasks:

giving 2 to 3 presentations

going to countless meetings where she is the lead

doing performance reviews

conducting job interviews and firings

reporting to the boss

AND leading the executive team’s meeting

She is extremely good at her job but finds at the end of certain days that she is a nervous wreck and, unhappily, brings that energy home to her family. She wonders if maybe she isn’t cut out for a VP position with all its added stress. Somedays she looks at her colleagues whom she oversees and wonders if she would be happier with less money and fewer responsibilities. But when she looks at where she wants to go next, a demotion isn’t advisable.

What Claire needs isn’t a demotion, it’s a different attitude and knowledge base. She needs to know how to separate herself from her stress and emotions and choose behavior that supports her leadership responsibilities. Claire needs "Poo on your Shoe!" Watch the short video below.

As for Claire, the way she feels stress around these leadership responsibilities is not a sign that she isn’t cut out for leadership! She is responding the way humans were meant to respond to these pressures. She is not broken or damaged or weak. She is simply a human who is reacting the way humans react to these performance pressures.

She needs more "Poo on your Shoe" attitude!

Note: If you haven't watch the "Poo on your Shoe" video above, do it now!

One of the first steps to resolve the pressures on leaders is to understand how you as a human are built to respond to these pressures, and then, how to adapt your human response so that it fits your leadership objectives. Basically, how to adapt your human response so that you choose the best way to respond for your needs, not the automatic way to which your human DNA defaults.

Fight to be POSITIVE!

Neuroscience teaches us that the human response to performance stress defaults to negative. So we have to fight to be positive or our bodies will automatically default to negative.

So what Claire is feeling, what humans feel, what YOU feel, is natural.

When under stress, Claire, me, you, all of us, have to FIGHT to be positive. There are so many reasons that we fight to be positive. But one of the big ones is that POSITIVE is POWER. Walking into a stressful room with positive energy confers, just by itself, a huge advantage vs. walking in the room filled with negative energy which carries a monstrous disadvantage.

Now is an excellent time to watch the short video, "Fight to be Positive" below.

What Claire, and the rest of us need is to "Fight to be Positive!"

Claire and the rest of us have a journey ahead. From stress and fear to understanding our human response to these pressures (with lots of help from neuroscience) and then turbocharging with positive. There are strategies that help guide us on this exciting and transformative journey. To learn more about these strategies get our FREE 4 part Video Training Mini-Course below.

Leadership requires skill sets specific to your industry.

These skill sets usually revolve around what your company/organization actually make or do. Most likely you are a Leader because you excel at these skill sets. BUT leadership also requires strange and specific skill sets revolving around performance and delivery.

Performance and delivery create immense stress in most Leaders.

However there is a widespread attitude that this stressful aspect of leadership is something the individual has to cope with. But feeling stress about performance is definitely NOT an individual issue. It’s a species issue. Humans have this challenge.

>>> And yet most Leaders are left to sink or swim on their own. And they quite often do this WITHOUT any discussion, guidance or empathy, while they endure one of the guaranteed stress factors of leadership.

Are YOU a stressed out Leader?

Are YOU a Stressed Out Leader?

This is a very strange situation. You could be amazing as a Leader in your content abilities and your knowledge of how to work with the teams who make/do what you make/do. But you might also feel overwhelmed by the other side of leadership, the performance and delivery side. You certainly wouldn’t be alone in this feeling. Quite the contrary.

Let me be even more direct.

  • Have you ever found a new place to sweat from when you have to “perform" some of your leadership duties?
  • Does the thought of giving a presentation or speech cause slippery palms? Breath gasping? Stomach churning?
  • When you feel stress and anxiety, do you feel paralyzed and helpless?
  • Have you been there? Struggling? Fighting? Maybe hurting? No fun, right?
  • Does STRESS stop you from achieving your goals as a LEADER?
  • Do you have important things to say but struggle getting them out?
  • Do you self-sabotage under stress?
  • Does fear (stress) grip you before or during important meetings or events?
